Existing Dental Patient, has a recent sleep study

A. You are a current patient at our office. You currently have healthy gum tissue and no pending dental treatment. Your sleep study is less than a year old. The study has a diagnosis of sleep apnea by a Medical Doctor. This doctor has a recommended treatment of an oral appliance and a prescription is written for the oral appliance. We can move forward.

1. Have a CBCT 3D x-ray taken here at the office. This advanced image will be read by a Radiologist. The report will have detailed information about the airway, sinuses, nasal septum and jaw joints. The CBCT is important to rule out obstructions in the nose, sinus and airway.

2. Dr. Nugent will receive the reports from the Radiologist. Dr. Nugent will review the report. You will come in for a consultation and Dr. Nugent will review your results.

3. If everything is OK to proceed then we can start the impressions and exam for the oral appliance.

4. The sleep apnea oral device is delivered.

5. The oral appliance is titrated. Once a comfortable position is found, you will repeat the Home Sleep Study to verify the sleep apnea oral device is helping.

6. You will be seen for a one month follow up, then a 6 month follow up. Yearly follow ups will be scheduled. Change appliance every 5 years.

B. If the Sleep Study does not contain a diagnosis, recommended treatment with oral appliance and a prescription for an oral appliance then Dr. Nugent cannot proceed. Sleep Apnea is a medical diagnosis and Dr. Nugent needs to work under the direction of a medical doctor.

You are free to ask your doctor if he/she will write a diagnosis, recommendation and oral appliance prescription for Dr. Nugent. Historically, medical doctors are not familiar on how to utilize a dentist for mandibular advancement therapy and will not help you get an oral appliance.

Our office can help you get around your Medical Doctors lack of cooperation. We have set up work flow that partners with Board Certified Sleep Physicians that understand the important role dentists play in making mandibular advancement devices when appropriate. To move forward with our workflow.

In your own house, in your own bed, you will sleep with the equipment. You will do this for two days. Then simply put the equipment back in the pre-paid shipping box and send the equipment back. A board-certified sleep physician will analyze your sleep study. A diagnosis and recommendation of treatment will be given by the medical doctor.
